His story…

Many new readers struggle with word recognition, fluency, and comprehension. Being enrolled in the pilot LEAP program, Ali mastered word recognition and comprehension; however, he made slow progress in reading fluently.

A crucial aspect of literacy instruction focuses on a child’s reading fluency in the early grades, which is a combination of rate, accuracy, and expression. The ability to read fluently at the appropriate rate is perhaps the most challenging part of a new reader’s journey.

Ali’s charter school, end of the year promotion requirements for Grade 1 Scholars entering 2nd Grade is for students to achieve Independent Reading Level J, reading at 75 words per minute (WPM). Ali reached Independent Reading Level I in January. At the time, he was performing two levels above the school’s benchmark. However, because Ali was a struggling reader, his teachers had a valid concern that Ali would not develop fast enough to meet the school’s end-of-year expectations in June.
